Surrender

Just A Horse Rescue and Sanctuary does accept surrendered horses. We do not require a surrender fee, however we do suggest a donation of your choosing. Please contact us for more information and the surrender form.

Meet our Horses

Winston, an appaloosa gelding-is missing an eye and was being picked on by the other horses in his pen at a feed lot. It was decided he needed a safe place to land, so he was brought home. He turned out to be an awesome riding horse Two years ago he started having hip issues so he was retired. He is also slowly losing sight in his other eye. He is now allowed to roam the property.

Lucky, a blind mare, was dropped off at a kill lot. They reached out to several rescues they knew and we were able to rescue her. She is very friendly and loves attention, however, it does take her some time to feel comfortable with new people. We installed white vinyl fencing for her, and now Brownie and Winston have their own 2 acre pasture with a lean to for them them to get in out of inclement weather.

Brownie is a mini mare who has become a great guide horse for Lucky. She is not comfortable with people she does not know and needs work with leading, however, the young kids that volunteer are helping her with this.

Tonic is a 12 year old Off the Track Thoroughbred gelding. He was taken in from a rescue as he has a hairline fracture and bone spur on a front leg and tendon issues in a back leg from his racing days which make him unsound for riding. He is a very affectionate gelding and loves attention. Being a thoroughbred he often needs additional feed to keep his weight up.

Polly came in with Tonic. She is a 4 year old filly that had a crooked leg at birth. Because nothing was done to straighten it at that time, the bone will always be a bit crooked. X-rays were taken and shows that the bone is straighter than it appears, and with consistent corrective trimming she is now pain free. She was not used to being around people but has learned to enjoy attention and is often the first to approach us in the pasture. She does need work with learning to respect personal space.

Penny is a 14 year old Appaloosa mare. She has Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Desmitis which is a systemic disease of the connective tissue. This currently is affecting both her back fetlocks, with swelling and gradual dropping towards the ground. There is no known cure or treatment. Penny is a sweet girl and loves attention.

Brandy was a barrel horse until she had an accident and injured her shoulder. She is now no longer ridable but is very friendly and loves attention. She enjoys being groomed and stands well. After her injury she was taken in by a rescue and rehomed to a couple that was looking for a pasture mate for their only horse. When that horse passed she was returned to the rescue. We then took her in to give her a forever home. She and Lacey have become best friends.

Lacey is a mare that was rescued several years ago. She was bred at the time and had a beautiful colt. The colt was rehomed after a year and Lacey was rehomed to a neighbor for their kids to ride. She is now 25 and retired so they returned her to the sanctuary to live out her life.

Jet was Elaine’s personal horse and was ridden for trails and some fun gaming. She is the horse that began her passion for horses which led to the formation of the sanctuary. She was bought at age 4 and has been an inspiring teacher. She is currently 23 and although she is still healthy and fit, she has been retired to be able to enjoy her remaining years.

Springer is a Shetland pony who has been at the farm for 14 years and is in his mid 20’s. He has the usual pony attitude, however, it has settled some in his later years. He is now retired. He loves having Palmer and Charlie to hang out with. Last year he was diagnosed with Cushings and is also borderline Insulin Resistant.

Palmer came to us when a friend called from the kill lot where she was picking up a horse and asked if there were any wanted while she was there. Palmer was purchased as it was felt that Springer could use a pony friend. He was listed as age 5, however, when he arrived we realized he was more like 25. He also has Cushings and is Insulin Resistant so he has proven to be a best friend for Springer. Palmer is very calm and is a great pony for the young kids that come to volunteer to groom him. He also now has a tumor on his eye that with the vet’s input it was decided not to remove because of his age. Even with having sore hooves from the Cushings/IR and his eye tumor he seems to enjoy his life and when he finds his way out of the dry lot for some much enjoyed grass, we are happy that he feels good enough to show some spunk!

Charlie is a pony mare that was rescued from a kill lot and is in her mid teens. She is healthy and also likes attention, She is slowly learning how to stand tied. The young kids who volunteer enjoy grooming her and with their help she has learned to stand well for grooming and tacking.  A young volunteer, who takes riding lessions, with our supervision is working with her to be part of our basic riding program.

Spirit is a 9 year old mare that was rescued at the same time as Charlie. She had a sarcoid tumor on her eye. As it had not been taken care of it was quite large. She was not trusting of humans so we had to wait until she would let us catch her and get more used to us before we could treat it. It took about 4 months before we were able to start treatment but then were able to surgically remove the tumor, then gave her injections to clear the remaining affected cells around her eye. It did not affect her eyesight and she is doing well. She now approaches us in the pasture and enjoys attention. We believe with patience and the appropriate training she will make a great riding partner.

Summer is an ex pacer. After her pacing career she was sold to the Amish. She then ended up in a kill lot because she had a hoof issue that could not be determined. Our farrier decided that she had an infection in the hoof that had never been treated. The sole of that hoof grows faster than the outer hoof wall so it is painful when she walks on the sole. The farrier cups out the sole to keep her comfortable. Her hoof was x-rayed and it was found that the coffin bone has begun to deteriorate. She now has a shoe on that hoof to help keep her comfortable. Because of her past she is still leary of people.

Remington is a 20+ year old appaloosa POA mare who was a gymkhana horse .for her previous owner. She developed ringbone in her front leg so the owner surrendered her to JAHRS. She is currently on Cosequin ASU until the joint fuses. At that time it will no longer be painful for her, it will just not be as limber. She will spend her remaining years at the sanctuary.

Callie is a mid teens mare that was rescued from a kill pen. She is very calm and loves attention, however, she also needs some work with standing tied. With a refresher she will make a great riding partner.

Cookies ‘n Cream, CiCi for short, is a late teens appaloosa mare. She came to us with Callie. She has needed some work with respecting personal space but with daily leading she is getting much better. She also likes attention, but does need work with standing for grooming.

Rosie is a 25 year old mare that her prior owner rescued from a kill pen believing her to be about 15. She was planning on using her for her riding horse, however, when she realized her actual age she felt a retirement home would be more appropriate for her so she was surrendered to JAHRS. She is also very friendly and loves spending her time in the pasture with the others.

Jazzy is a 15 year old Quarter/Pony/Standardbred cross gelding. He has been with us since birth. He has the pony attitude so it takes some patience and acceptance of his nature to help him be his best. He definitely has a humorous side to him but is also the horse the others all pay attention to in the pasture.

Rayna is a 12 year old saddlebred/morgan cross mare. She is often mistaken for a mustang as she certainly looks like one. She has been been with us since birth and has become a calm, confident riding mare. She is currently being used for basic lessons.

India is an early teens mare that was rescued from a kill pen several years ago and with some patience and training she has come a long way in her training. She does need consistent work to continue to be a confident riding partner.

Red is a senior gelding that has only one eye. His owner surrendered him as he was not appropriate for their program. He is very friendly and enjoys attention. After having an X-Ray it has been determined he has arthritis in his back knee and currently on supplements and Previcox to keep him pain free.

Athena is a senior mare who was surrendered to us. She was living with a pasture mate in a small paddock. A few years ago her pasture mate died so she was currently living alone. She was only being fed and watered and otherwise had no human interaction. She is now being allowed to acclimate to her new home; after a few weeks we will begin to work with her to accept human interaction so we can provide the necessary vet and farrier care for her.

Harmony is a registered 15 year old Appaloosa mare. She was adopted out and surrendered back due to inability to care for her. She like to make you work to catching her but the follows willingly. She currently green broke and will need additional training to be a confident riding partner.

Willow is a 2 year old filly. She was surrendered to us due to an extremely swollen and painful knee. After X-Ray it was determined she had an infection in the knee that had made its way into the bone. This caused bone spurs on the knee cap. It was initially thought she would need to be euthanized, however we decided to try supplements and pain meds to get her to pain free. She is currently in the barn in a large area and doing well. From time to time she shows personality running and bucking.

Barnes and Noble were recently rescued from a kill lot in Kansas. They are currently being fostered. They are unused to humans but only being 3 – 4 months old they should accept us without too much effort. Both being colts they will need to be gelded this spring. Barnes looks like he will be a bay and Noble with frost bitten ears appears to be a sorrel. They will both be available for adoption when they have been gelded and accept human interaction.
